The news came at E3 2019 on YouTube Live’s show with host Geoff Keighley. In an interview with some developers from Bungie, Destiny Game Director Luke Smith said that Shadowkeep’s narrative is a direct result from the closing events from the base campaign that players experienced when Destiny 2 launched in 2017.
This should be exciting for Destiny fans who have often felt as though Bungie keeps introducing new narratives into the game without ever tying up the loose ends of previous narratives. Even Smith himself admitted during the recent Shadowkeep reveal livestream that many of Destiny 2’s additional content since the launch of the game has numerous “monster of the week” stories, which introduce a new foe for players to defeat and then that story wraps up. But according to Smith talking at E3, it sounds like that will be changing starting with Shadowkeep:
Since its split from Activision earlier this year, Bungie looks to be trying to give players what they want. Among those is to give the game’s narrative more forward momentum that connects these various story threads, and it looks like Shadowkeep could be the first step in that direction.
Much of the talk from Smith and Bungie is that they are working toward the goal of a more complete Destiny universe that the developers at Bungie and the game’s players want, but with that is the notion that it is going to take time to get there. But with Bungie now self-publishing the game and fully in creative control, it will be interesting to see just what the future holds for the Destiny franchise.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, Ps4, and Xbox One. Shadowkeep releases September 17, 2019.
