Destiny 2: Forsaken is ready to deliver all new weapons and gear to players this fall, including a new bow weapon type as well as introduce random weapon rolls, but those old favorites will still remain relevant. This will likely be through the use of Infusion that Year 1 weapons and armor can continue to be brought along in power level.

Talking to Game Informer, Bungie game director Steve Cotton says Bungie didn’t want to lock out Year 1 weapons but says owning Forsaken is required to rise in level:

That new power will take players on a grind to Forsaken’s new 50 character level and 600 Power level caps, which are the biggest jumps in level cap since the launch of Destiny 2. More Bungie developers have tweeted in addition to this quote from Cotton echoing his confirmation that any Legendary or Exotic gear in the game will be able to move forward into Year 2.

This was a concern for some long-time fans of Destiny, considering that during the lifespan of the first game with certain expansions and the start of new years of the game, Bungie locked out weapons that were in previous expansions and the launch version of the game. There were times when the developer allowed guns to move forward, most notably in the House of Wolves expansion with the use of the Etheric Light consumable.

Letting all the gear carry forward will likely introduce the challenge for Bungie to make the newest gear in the expansion more interesting to use than old favorites, but considering that random rolls on weapons are coming with Forsaken, that may deliver on that front. And allowing players to hold onto their favorites from the past is usually a positive move in the eyes of fans.

Destiny 2: Forsaken launches September 4, 2018 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
