In particular, the Forsaken weapon system will no longer restrict weapons to a specific slot. Shotguns, for example, won’t always be defined as Power weapons. Players will be able to find weapon types for the three different categories (Kinect, Energy, and Power), in a change that is being welcomed by much of the Destiny 2 player base.

In an interview at gamescom 2018, Destiny 2 community manager David “Deej” Dague responded to questions about this massive new change and how it came about. The interviewer noted that some of the features being introduced existed in Destiny 1 in some capacity, and so they’re really being re-implemented. “Is that you as a developer saying ‘we recognize this is what the community wants’ and these things might be here to stay?” asked the interviewer.

“Is that you as a developer saying ‘we recognize this is what the community wants’ and these things might be here to stay?” asked the interviewer, with Deej appearing to somewhat agree with this assessment. The community manager explained, “Every time we update Destiny, we update it with what we feel the community wants and needs the most for the game to be what it is that they crave at that moment.”

This is also apparent with the Forsaken expansion, said Deej, where Bungie is “looking at really reinforcing the things that make Destiny a hobby.” The concept of encouraging players to spend more time in Destiny 2 was reinforced several times during the interview.

Longstanding Destiny fans may see this as an admission and an acknowledgment that Bungie went wrong with Destiny 2’s weapon system. The weapon system in the base version of the game was met with some controversy upon release, and fans had called for a return to total randomness. While Bungie may not be going far enough in that regard, it at least shows that the developer is reticent of their concerns.

Destiny 2 has received many quality of life improvements since launching back in 2017, with some of these – such as the changes to mods, for instance – being introduced with Forsaken. The game may not be quite where fans want it just yet, but Forsaken may leave many feeling optimistic that more progress is on the way.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
