On top of the new weapons, players were also graced with a few returning pieces. While this list will primarily focus on the new weapons that were introduced for season 17, a few honorable mentions from the Opulent weapons category have been added. They are separate from the rest of the ranking but are included due to how powerful and popular they are. Here’s which weapons to farm during his season in Destiny 2, ranked. Note that all these weapons can drop Deepsight versions with extractable Patterns, and can therefore be crafted.
Honorable Mention: Austringer Hand Cannon
Perks: Eye Of The Storm, Outlaw, Rangefinder, Opening Shot
Ironically, this honorable mention of a returning hand cannon is easily the best weapon players have access to this season, especially if PVP is their main focus. The Austringer is a fantastic PVP hand cannon that can roll with some really powerful perks.
Not just that, once players have unlocked five Patterns they can craft their perfect Austringer easily. It’s no wonder why so many players have been farming this hand cannon in the first week, given it can receive the enhanced traits of Eye of the Storm, Outlaw, Rangefinder, and Opening Shot, all great for PVP.
Honorable Mention: Beloved Sniper Rifle
Perks: Snapshot Sights, No Distractions, Quickdraw, Box Breathing
Another returning weapon that has every Destiny 2 PVP player in excitement is the Beloved sniper rifle, which was once one of the most powerful sniper rifles in the game. Players can now farm its patterns and craft their perfect roll for PVP purposes.

Even with Snapshot Sights nerfed, it can still be a decent perk, along with No Distractions, Quickdraw and Box Breathing.
6 Firefright Auto Rifle
Perks: Fragile Focus, Osmosis
Now, on to the ranking. At the bottom of the list is Firefright, the new seasonal auto rifle, which is undoubtedly the weakest choice of the bunch. There aren’t many great auto rifles in Destiny 2 to begin with, as many of them have an annoying bullet spread pattern or they’re simply too weak.
Firefright’s perks aren’t the most enticing ones, either. Players should look for a drop with Fragile Focus or Osmosis, or they can farm the Patterns and craft one themselves, though their materials are best saved for other, more powerful weapons on this list.
5 Hollow Denial Trace Rifle
Perks: Rangefinder, Heating Up, Wellspring, Dragonfly
Bungie continues to try and make trace rifles relevant in the game, this time by introducing the second Legendary trace rifle ever into the game since the 30th Anniversary update. Hollow Denial is a decent trace rifle, but given the niche nature of trace rifles, it ends up ranking low on the list.
That said, there is an Overload trace rifle artifact mod for season 17, so players who prefer that over Overload SMGs and auto rifles, which can be a bit inconsistent at times, look for a Hollow Denial with Rangefinder, Heating Up, Wellspring or Dragonfly.
4 Nezarec’s Whisper Glaive
Perks: Impulse Amplifier, Frenzy, Vorpal Weapon
Another weapon category that desperately needs some love is glaives. While the seasonal Unstoppable mod includes glaives once again, it’s unlikely players will use glaives outside of certain, extremely niche situations. That’s what makes Nezarec’s Whisper such a weak weapon.

However, those who love including glaives into their more niche and non-meta builds can still farm and/or craft this glaive and look for fantastic perks like Impulse Amplifier, Frenzy, and even Vorpal Weapon, the latter being the redeeming quality of this glaive over some of the other glaives players currently have access to.
3 Bump In The Night Rocket Launcher
Perks: Field Prep, Tracking Module, Auto-Loading Holster, Vorpal Weapon
Rocket launchers have been average at best since the start of season 17, with linear fusion rifles like Stormchaser and Cataclysmic dominating in DPS. That said, in mid-tier PVE the Bump In The Night rocket launcher can still be a decent choice.
Players should craft or farm one with perks like Field Prep, Tracking Module, and Vorpal Weapon. Auto-Loading Holster is an absolute must-have for rocket launchers these days, so players shouldn’t even bother with the Bump In The Night without this perk if they plan on using it as their primary heavy weapon.
2 Without Remorse Shotgun
Perks: Threat Detector, One-Two Punch, Vorpal Weapon, Incandescent
Back to some PVP weapons, the seasonal shotgun Without Remorse shows a little bit of promise for players looking for a cheap shotgun to break them into the PVP side of Destiny 2. It’s not the best shotgun the game has to offer, but with the right perks, it can be quite a beast. Plus, its light frame is perfect for PVP where fast movement is key.
Look for perks like Threat Detector and One-Two Punch for PVP, where being in close-range combat is a common occurrence. For more PVE-oriented builds, players should definitely go for Vorpal Weapon, which can suit close-up boss phases as seen in the new Duality dungeon. Incandescent can be a fun way to implement this shotgun into Solar builds.
1 Tears Of Contrition Scout Rifle
Perks: Triple Tap, Perpetual Motion, Opening Shot, Vorpal Weapon, Explosive Payload, Fourth Time’s The Charm, Focused Fury
The strongest new weapon to come out this season, purely in terms of the sheer number of interesting perks is the new Tears of Contrition scout rifle. While not the best scout rifle in the game, period, it can be a nice addition to anyone looking desperately for a solid scout to add to their arsenal.
There are a ton of good perk options, making it a good choice for crafting. Players can lean either PVE or PVP, with Triple Tap, Perpetual Motion, Opening Shot, and Fourth Time’s The Charm. There are also good PVE scout rifle perk options like Vorpal Weapon and Explosive Payload, which can make this scout decently powerful.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
