Xûr is an agent of The Nine, a group of extremely powerful and mysterious beings who live on another plane of existence. In terms of the overall story, Xûr has had little to no impact — he’s a simple NPC who sells rare items on weekends. However, that does not mean that he isn’t interesting.

7 He Does Not Serve All Of The Nine

Over the course of Forsaken, Destiny 2 has managed to answer some of the series’ biggest lore mysteries, but players still do not know much about the group that created Xûr. The Nine are made up of dark matter, and they are sentient beings who only became self-aware once gravity pulled them into the solar system. Their lives seem to be connected to the planets and their inhabitants, and they control large portions of the solar system past Jupiter.

The Nine are currently split into two factions. Four of them no longer wish to rely on matter-based life and the Light for survival, while the other five want to study the Light. Those five are the ones who created Xûr and sent him to interact with Guardians.

6 His Movements Are Based On Planetary Alignments

In the original Destiny, Xûr would appear in one of six locations throughout the system. The formula in Destiny 2 was pretty much the same, but now that Titan and Io are in the content vault, he only appears in the Tower’s hangar, the Winding Cove in the EDZ, and at the Watcher’s Grave on Nesus.

At first glance, Xûr’s location every week appears to be a simple rotation implemented by Bungie, but his movements actually have some significance. Xûr comes from Jovian planets past Jupiter. Because of this, his movements, according to the lore, are predicated on specific planetary alignments.

5 He Appeared After The Great Ahamkara Hunt

Riven is arguably the franchise’s hardest final raid boss, and before she was taken by Oryx, she was the last living Ahamkara. The Ahamkara were a race of dragons that supposedly appeared during the Golden Age, and Guardians sought them out because of their ability to grant wishes.

These wishes never turned out well, though, and the Vanguard eventually deemed that they were too dangerous to live. This started the Great Ahamkara Hunt, and the Guardians drove the species to near extinction. Xûr first appeared shortly after the hunt ended, and a Cryptarch believes that The Nine sent the emissary to replace the Ahamkara.

4 His Resource Requirments Have Changed

It is true that Xûr sometimes offers the game’s most useless exotics, but at least he gives players a chance to acquire a few of the game’s rarest weapons and armor pieces every week. In Destiny 2, players can buy exotics from Xûr in exchange for Legendary Shards, and an extra exotic engram can be purchased with an Exotic Cipher. Legendary weapons and vaulted armor can also be purchased with shards and glimmer.

In the original game, Xûr only accepted Strange Coins in exchange for his wares. There are a bunch of items from the original game that veteran players would like to see in Destiny 2, but the coins are not one of them because they are essentially pointless now.

3 The Light May Cause Him Pain

From the beginning, the Traveler and the Light have been considered forces of good, while the Darkness, and everyone associated with it, have been deemed evil. Some of The Nine may be interested in the Light, but they never physically interacted with it until they met Orin, a Titan who was transformed into The Emissary.

Since The Nine are made of dark matter, it is believed that the Light causes them some degree of harm, and Xûr helps to prove this theory. In the original game, he has a voice line stating, “So much Light here, I suppose I feel pain.” In both games, Xûr either spawns in indoor areas, or in places where there is very little light.

2 He’s Considered A Prototype

He may have been created, but Xûr is still considered a Jovian. Although he has a body of his own, he apparently lacks free will. His loyalty to The Nine is absolute, but for all intents and purposes, he is nothing more than a prototype.

Xûr calls himself an agent of The Nine, but there is a significant difference between him and The Emissary who was once named Orin. Unlike Xûr, Orin has a full physical form, and she still possesses some level of free will and desire.

1 He Was Attacked By A Guardian In The Past

There are quite a few misconceptions about Destiny 2, but no one can say that the franchise does not have deep lore. Most players likely think that Xûr has always had a hunched posture, but The Nine did not design him that way.

When Orin was still a Guardian, Queen Mara Sov asked her to find out what role The Nine played in Sjur Eido’s disappearance. During the mission, Eido met with and interrogated Xûr, who he her to forgive The Nine. When he reached into his robes, she took it as a threat and slammed her war hammer into his chest. The attack broke Xûr’s spine, but he managed to survive, though he was left with the hunched frame players recognize now.
